Author visits are some the most rewarding things that I do as a book creator. I love meeting my readers and giving them a behind-the-scenes look at my books. As a child, I was privileged to have Caldecott Medal winner Trina Schart Hyman visit my elementary school each year to talk about her books. These visits left a lasting impression on me, and years later she became my mentor, inspiring me to pursue a career as an artist. When I visit schools, I hope to give students an experience that excites them about reading, science and art. Who knows, maybe I will inspire a student to follow their dreams as Trina once inspired me.

My Presentation
My standard presentation includes a slideshow, Q&A and art project. The presentation gives students an inside look at how I make a book. I talk about the science behind the book, my research process and how I write and illustrate my books. If I’ve gone on location to do research, the slideshow includes photos from my research trip.
The presentation is designed to fit one class period (45 to 60 minutes), but can be extended or shortened as needed. I am happy to present to large or small groups, and can adjust the content of my presentation to make it appropriate for students from Kindergarten to Middle School (and occasionally I even visit high schools). If a teacher is interested in a particular topic, I can adjust the presentation to meet the teacher’s needs.

Virtual Author Visits
My virtual presentation is based on my in-person presentation, but differs in several ways:
- Studio Visit
Since I present from my studio, students will get to see my workspace. - Watercolor Demonstration
Since I present from my desk, I have the option of doing a watercolor painting demonstration. - Expanded Q&A
I find the best way to connect with students during virtual presentations is by answering their questions, so there is more time devoted to the Q&A in my virtual presentation.
